Third Grade Curriculum
Math - This year the main topics we will study in math include, Numeration (identify place value relationships through 100,000), Number Sense (add and subtract whole numbers within 1, 000), Multiplication and Division (solve problems within 100 using arrays, strip diagrams and equations), Multiplication of 2 digit by 1 digit numbers, Patterns and Equations (represent problems using equations and relationships between numbers using a table), Fractions (compare fractions and identify equivalent fractions), Shapes and Solids, Perimeter and Area, Measurement (capacity, weight, mass and time), Data Analysis (summarize data using frequency tables, dot plots, bar graphs, and pictographs), and Personal Financial Literacy (planned vs. unplanned spending, income, credit and savings).
We will be practicing math facts in class each day. It would be helpful for students to also practice math facts at home. Students will have online access to our Math curriculum enVision Math. In addition, students can access their Reflex and Khan Academy accounts from home.
Science/Social Studies - We will be using the Social Studies Weekly curriculum this year during our Social Studies block. Students will read newspapers on various topics related to community, famous Americans, the arts, and culture and traditions. Students will do the majority of their work in class. Reading comprehension quizzes, activities and projects are used to assess learning. In Science, we follow the FOSS curriculum and explore energy and matter, earth science, and life science. We will be engaged in many hands on learning opportunities this year.
Reading - Students will have opportunities to read in small groups, whole group and participate in literature circles during Language Arts. We will introduce reading skills with mini lessons using mentor texts. Students will create a reading notebook to record their thoughts and ideas. The students will have opportunities to share their thoughts and findings both in a whole group setting and during their reading group time. We will have weekly in-class assignments in the form of a menu. Students will have the flexibility to choose some of the activities they complete. A portion of the activities on the menu will be completed by all class members and those activities follow our reading skill of the week. Our goal during reading workshop is to build the foundation for a life long love of reading. It is important for your child's growth as a reader to read approximately one book per week. As a result, we want to encourage students to read one chapter book at a time, so please remind them to carry it back and forth in their backpack. Students will be taking Accelerated Reader tests online throughout the year to earn points for their weekly reading grade. The AR reading comprehension tests are accessible through the school iPads and computers.
Cursive Handwriting - We will be using the Handwriting Without Tears approach to cursive. This work will take place in class with a few minutes of practice each day. We will also work on keyboarding skills using the Keyboarding Without Tears program. Students work at their own pace through on-line lessons. It is very engaging and the students love it. They will practice their newly developed keyboarding skills by typing some of our writing projects. Please feel free to encourage your child to practice both cursive and keyboarding at home!
Writing Workshop - Students will maintain a writer's notebook in class to record their stories and writing ideas. The students will write personal narratives, imaginative stories, a how-to mini book, letters, a persuasive piece and a biography of a famous American. We will be doing our writing, sharing, and publishing during writers' workshop.
